SIOUX CITY, Iowa-- The Northwestern College Red Raiders held onto an early lead to knock off the Briar Cliff Chargers, 91-83, and to reserve a spot in the national championship game.
The Red Raiders started the game with a flare, making an 8-0 run. Briar Cliffs' Liz Grider finally put the Chargers on the board after hitting a 3-pointer three minutes into the game. The Chargers continued to fight back, getting the score within two points, 12-10, after a 3-pointer from Michelle Determan.
Grider hit a field goal in the next position to tie the score at 12 with 14:21 remaining in the half.
A 3-pointer from Val Kleinjan gave the Raiders an 11 point lead, 33-22, with 8:46 left. Briar Cliff once again battled back, getting within three points, 44-4,1 after a three-point conversion from Likeisha Dotson with 19 seconds remaining in the half. Northwestern was able to add a basket and went into halftime with a five point lead.
The start of the second half was a duplicate of the start of the game. Northwestern went on a 12-2 run, capped off by 3-pointer from Kleinjan.
The Chargers refused to go away and Morgan Brown hit two consecutive 3-pointers, with the second bringing the the Chargers within five points at 76-71 with 7:14 remaining in the game. Briar Cliff continued to edge closer as Christina Stewart hit a pair of free throws which brought them within three points, 78-75, with 4:43 remaining in the game.
Northwestern then went a 6-0 run and won the game 91-83.
Becca Hurley led the Raiders with 28 points, including 5-8 from beyond the arc. Teammates Kendra De Jong and Randa Hulstein each scored 14 points. As a team, the Red Raiders shot over 50 percent in both halves and finished the game hitting 10-17 3-pointers.
Liz Grider led the Chargers with 20 points and Morgan Brown followed with 19.
Northwestern College will play Shawnee State in the championship game on Tuesday at 9 p.m. at the Tyson Events Center in Sioux City, Iowa.
