Hastings College Alumni Bill Gavers ’88 announced that he will be the new head coach of men’s basketball this morning in a press conference held in the legacy room of the Fleharty Athletic arena. Five months ago the former head coach Lance Creech announced his retirement following the 2012-2013 season.

“This is a great opportunity, Hastings College is a special place,” Said Bill Gavers. “I’m excited about working with the players and we want to be great. We want greatness, we want to compete, and we want to compete for championships.”

Bill has spent the last 22 years as the head coach of Grand Island Central Catholic men’s basketball team. In that time span, Bill is responsible for a 421-127 record that included 12 trips to the state tournament as well as a championship title in 2000 and 19 top ten finishes, in 2008 his team finished runner up in the championship.

“When one of his former college teammates expressed to me how much Bill’s leadership on the court and in the classroom at Hastings College had meant in his life, I knew Bill was our next coach, “Said HC Athletic Director Jerry Schmutte. “We are very happy about it and he is going to do a great job.

Hastings College finished fifth in the GPAC with an overall 20-11 last season under Lance Creech. Bill Gavers will be effective as HC head basketball coach on June 1st, 2013.
