Softball wraps up season

softball2_webHC softball has seen a great deal of success this season, positing a 29-12 (16-4) record this year. The Broncos led the conference standings throughout the season but struggled in the conference tournament play this past weekend in Sioux City.

The Broncos made quick work in the first three rounds, beating Briar Cliff, Doane and Morningside of scores of 9-4, 13-5 and 3-0. After this, the Broncos earned the right to play in the GPAC championship match Sunday. Despite beating Morningside in the third round, the Mustangs were also able to advance to the championship.

Morningside had to beat Hastings in two straight games in order to clinch the GPAC title. The Mustangs did just that taking the first game 19-8, leaning on a six run first and a ten run sixth inning to control the game. The Broncos added just five of their runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

The second game ended the same as the first. The Broncos stayed strong but gave up a four run fourth and a five run fifth, so the Mustangs took the GPAC Championship away from the Broncos, who had won the regular season GPAC Title 10-1. “Morningside is a very solid team; they don’t have any weaknesses, they have good hitting, pitching and defense” said head coach Troy Baker.

The loss, however, didn’t change the postseason play, as the Broncos had already earned a trip to the national tournament after winning the regular season GPAC Conference title at Morningside April 29. “I think the team is very excited to get there, but they want to do something to prove that they belong there,” Baker said.

Broncos will travel to Oklahoma City to play the No. 1 seed Oklahoma City Stars as they drew the fourth seed in the Oklahoma City bracket. The winner of each host site will move on and continue to play in the tournament. “As the season progressed, we knew we had the team to make the tournament and we are all ecstatic to get to be there,” said senior outfielder Felicia Graff.

The stars lead the NAIA in runs scored, runs batted in, hits, doubles and rank second in slugging percentage at .584. The game will be the second of the day as Freed-Hardeman, Tenn., and Bellevue, Neb., kick off at the host site on May 13.

This year, members of HC Media tried to predict a perfect bracket for the 2013 NCAA March Madness. However, like everybody else in the country, no one could call every matchup perfectly. Twenty-seven people involved with HC Media competed against each other and put their college basketball knowledge to the test.

The race to first place in the challenge was anything but certain, as people lost  and gained their lead with upsets and bad choices in their brackets. However, in the end the Collegian’s Trevor Brass, who won with his choice for the overall No. 1 seed Louisville to win, scored a total of 270 points in the challenge. He was closely followed with a tie of 258 points between freshman Mckenzie Wedel and 2011 graduate Nick Blasnitz for second place. [Read more...]

Moving up to another level, Mahoney making adjustment from HS to college

Effective June 1, Ryan Mahoney will serve as the head coach for the HC cross country and track and field teams. Current head coach Kendrick Clay announced earlier this year he is resigning after 10 years.

Mahoney was the head track and field coach at Southwest High School in Lincoln before coming to HC.

As head coach at Southwest and assistant coach at Lincoln Southeast—a position he held from 1998-2002—he led seven cross country and track and field teams to state championships. He also coached 11 individual state champions in various events.

Jerry Schmutte, athletic director, approached Mahoney early in the search process to see if there was mutual interest.

“It was honestly something I had to think about,” Mahoney said. “I really enjoy coaching and teaching at Southwest, but it was too good an opportunity to pass up.”

One immediate challenge for Mahoney will be to fill his small roster. Currently, there are only 38 track athletes returning next year. Mahoney said that he’s evaluated the roster and is already hard at work recruiting.

“I’m already trying to recruit as much as I can outside of work and practice hours now,” Mahoney said. “We need to get our numbers up. Our numbers are [too] small right now to be able to compete at the conference level.”

Mahoney will bring his own coaching style to HC.

“I think to get the most out of people, you have to make it a place they want to come to every day,” Mahoney said. “They look forward to being at practice; they look forward to being with their teammates; and they’re willing to give that one hundred percent—not just for them, but for their teammates.”

Eight of the 17 qualifiers at indoor nationals are seniors, and four of the remaining nine are juniors.

Despite low numbers returning next year, Mahoney is still confident in HC.

“Hastings College, I think, has a lot of opportunities to really step it up and become a major player in the GPAC,” he said.
