Alcohol misuse turning to abuse

Hastings College is a “dry” campus, where alcohol is prohibited in all spaces except for the Bronco Village apartments that are declared alcohol-tolerant through a signed contract.

But don’t tell that to the maintenance staff members who have to pick up cans and bottles on campus after a weekend of parties.

This different reality of HC’s relation to alcohol also affects decisions about alcohol treatment services provided on campus. [Read more...]

Just north of campus, 12th street provides an entrance to Hastings College for many athletic events and visitors arriving north from Interstate 80.

Online registration arrives, really

A new online class registration system was released to the entire campus for the spring 2013 semester starting on Monday, Nov. 5.

Feedback from students and professors has been mostly positive, with nods of understanding for the hiccups encountered as HC transitions from the early-morning lines and yellow forms that marked the analogue system to pixels and clicks. [Read more...]

The American consulate in Benghazi, Libya was attacked on Sept. 11, leaving John Christopher Stevens, the American ambassador to Libya, and three others dead.  An angry crowd using small arms ransacked the embassy in a wave of protests that targeted the embassies of the U.S. other Western nations.

Cash for conferences controversial

As befits its bylaws. the Student Association doled out over $90,000 in activity fee funds to requesting groups on Sept. 17. However, this semester’s budget hearing was not without controversy, especially over conference funding for registration and hotel expenses given to small numbers of students and related issues of precedent.
The largest source of tension arose from the peer education groups’ request for registration and hotel reimbursements for the November BACCHUS General Assembly in Orlando, Fla. [Read more...]

Jami Lipker Williams – Celebration Weekend Speaker

Jami Lipker Williams, a 2005 graduate of Hastings College, returned to her alma mater Friday for Celebration Weekend to speak to students about life after college athletics. Currently employed by Mary Lanning Memorial Healthcare in the cardiac-pulmonary rehabilitation department, Williams said she is happy where here career is because she felt prepared by HC.

Robert Keith Gray, former presidential aide to Eisenhower and author, will be returning to his hometown of Hastings on Friday to promote his new book, “Presidential Perks Gone Royal: Your Taxes Are Being Used For Obama’s Re-election.” The visit is part of a book tour that will stop at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln on Thursday.

Scheduling for optimal time

With a new class catalog this spring, a new registration system coming this fall and many different schedules to accommodate, the registration system at Hastings College is in the process of major change.

While a faculty adviser signs off on every class registration slip, responsibility for graduating on time ultimately rests with the student, as there is no guarantee against having to take an additional semester or two to graduate.

Lyrid meteor shower will light up weekend skies

This Saturday night, Hastings residents will get a chance to view the Lyrid meteor shower peak, as a new moon ensures a dark sky and thus excellent viewing opportunities in the Northern Hemisphere.
Dr. Steven Bever, associate professor of physics, said that meteor showers are quite common, but ideal conditions are not. [Read more...]
