Valentine departs from HC, but leaves legacy of connection

As the sun sank lower into the sky, all of the students on the bus were sleeping.  But Dani Schwinn ‘12 always had trouble sleeping on buses, and Adam Schwinn ’12 had a lot on his mind, so they were still wide awake. The couple sat at the front of the bus, chatting with Dr. Judy Hall and Dr. Vicki Valentine on the ride through Mexico on the way to Belize, a part of their J-Term class.

They’re little girls tackling big subjects.

Sitting cross-legged in a circle on the pavement outside of the Hastings Middle School, about 15 girls listen respectfully to one another.

“I’m not good at math,” one says.

HC set to Welcome President Jackson

The Hastings and HC community will welcome President Donald Jackson at an inaugural service at First Presbyterian Church on Sunday, April 28, at 2 p.m..

The decision to opt for a service, rather than a ceremony on campus, was made by the board of trustees and Jackson, said Chief of Staff Matt Fong.

Speakers at inauguration include Dr. Dwayne Strasheim, Allison Kern and Vern Powers.

There will be a reception with cake and punch in First Presbyterian Church’s Fellowship Hall, immediately following the service.

A second reception will be held on campus for students and faculty at 5:15 p.m. in the cafeteria at Hazelrigg Student Union.  At the start of dinner, President Jackson and next year’s SA president Emily Johnson will speak briefly.  Hannah Jensen will provide the evening’s entertainment, playing the piano.

HC Forensics Team Finishes 18th at Nationals

The Hastings College forensics team placed 18th overall at the American Forensics Association National Individual Events Tournament this past weekend. The Broncos competed against 77 other schools after qualifying 41 events. The team placed 16th last year, with the same number of events qualified. [Read more...]

Survey to provide picture of Hastings’ retail environment

Five years ago, the Hastings Retail Development Committee conducted a retail survey to gauge the public’s perception of the selection of restaurants and retail stores available.  These results were then used to determine what services needed enhanced marketing and where expansion should be targeted.  The committee has once again issued a retail survey to update these results.   [Read more...]

The only “romantic lighting” comes from a TV, not candlelight, and the main entrée is Little Caesar’s pizza. Seated Indian-style on the floor, Malori Wright and her fiancé John Rivera are eating straight out of the pizza box and watching their favorite show. It’s a perfect night in their book. Transparency addressed in community meeting

HCMO_FeatureStudents and faculty met at 7 p.m. in Hazelrigg Student Union following the resignation of former President Dennis Trotter and the appointment of Don Jackson as the 16th president of Hastings College.

The meeting began with discussion over Trotter’s decision to resign, as students sought more specific answers than those given during the noon meeting today.

Hal Dittmer, chairman of the HC Board of Trustees, described Trotter as a “change agent” who identified what needed to be done to improve the college. The Board still supports goals set by Trotter, which include the renovations to HSU and the development of Ninth Street. [Read more...]
